YOUTUBE’S RELUCTANCE TO OFFER LIVE STREAMING LEAVES OPPORTUNITY FOR OTHERS

Posted by Bloggers Blog: Blogging the Blogsphere in August 15th 2008

Loading ... Loading ...
Silicon Alley Insider reports (via Search Engine Land) that YouTube is apparently not ready to offer live streaming as previously thought.
Outsiders have long considered live streaming as a logical next step for YouTube, which dominates the market for pre-recorded Web video. Co-founder Steve Chen gave credence to the idea himself in February when he told Pop17's Sarah Meyers: "Live video is something we've always wanted to do but haven't had the resources to do it correctly, but now with Google we hope to launch something this year."

But our source says that Google (GOOG) has never really seriously considered a live video service. We're told that the notion was discussed months after Chen's statement, but that the idea was tabled, for a variety of reasons. Chief among them: It would add significantly to Google's infrastructure and bandwidth costs at a time when it's trying to prove that the $1.65 billion it paid to buy the company will, at some point, pay off.

We're told that YouTube execs estimated that if just 10% of the service's users took advantage of live streaming, the company would have to add 20% to 25% to its huge server and bandwidth infrastructure to support it. Given that advertising dollars for live streaming are even scarcer than they are on conventional Web video, that's a significant investment with minimal near-term return. YouTube's sales team is still trying to figure out how to sell the inventory it already has.
If YouTube isn't going to jump into live streaming right away or at all that will be good news for some of the company's trying to develop live streaming.

A few websites offering life streaming include:

  • BlogTV
  • Justin.tv
  • Mogulus
  • Stickam
  • Ustream.tv
  • Yahoo Live

So far most of the people and shows doing live streams on these websites get very few visitors but blogs and video blogs started out with small amounts of traffic as well. At some point live streams will probably be such a common feature that you will probably be able to have a live stream from your webcam as your avatar should you want to. Live streaming may be an area where developing business-to-business software for video conferencing is far more lucrative than any social media opportunity.

    RETAILERS MONITORING BLOGGERS AND MICROBLOGS

Posted by Bloggers Blog: Blogging the Blogsphere in August 13th 2008

Retailers have been reaching out to bloggers for quite a while now. The smart retailers are monitoring social networks and the blogosphere to determine when it is the right time to jump in and contact a blogger. The right time might be when a blogger appears to need help using a product or when an article or blog post needs a correction. Internet Retailer has a article about how a few months ago Garmin, a GPS retailer, contacted popular blogger and twitterer Chris Brogan. Internet Retailer says Garmin monitors the web using Google Alerts.
GPS navigation retailer Garmin discovers bloggers through monitoring the web using Google Alerts, monitoring social networks and receiving word-of-mouth from customers. One blogger it found had a hard time finding his way around. He was constantly getting lost, and this personality quirk was a trademark. His name is Chris Brogan, and he evangelizes on social media and travels quite a bit on behalf of his social media company, CrossTech Media.

Garmin staff saw that Brogan's posts received a lot of comments on a regular basis, and that he had nearly 12,000 followers on social network Twitter. So one of Garmin's bloggers sent Brogan a Nuvi GPS device on the house.

"He was in Boston one day and got lost and blogged about it. And he mentioned it would be great if he had Garmin GPS. That mention of Garmin triggered a Google Alert," says Kyle Johnston, web and digital creative director at Garmin. "I sent him an e-mail and within two minutes he and I were on the phone. We then approached him like you would a press inquiry. We sent him a GPS unit, said we follow his blog and are very interested in what he has to say, and said hopefully you won't get lost so much anymore."
Chris Brogan explains how it happened in this post. He was tweeting in April about how it would be helpful if he had a GPS to keep from getting lost in Boston and that's how Garmin ended up contacting him.
I get lost a LOT. Boston isn't an easy city, and I'm not a very good directions person. Between the two, I had lots of opportunities to tweet that I was lost. In fact, @newmediajim once helped me find where I was in Manhattan while he was home in DC.

One day, I started tweeting things like, "Dear Garmin: I'm lost. If I had you, I wouldn't be lost any more." I did it to see what would happen. I did it a lot. And then one day, I got an email. "Dear Chris, we listened. May we send you a journalist evaluation unit?"

I have no obligations to Garmin to do anything with the unit, no request to blog about it, etc. And yet, when I use the thing, I tweet, "Not lost, because Garmin sent me a unit to test out," or versions of the same.
It probably helps to have a lot of followers on Twitter like Chris Brogan does to get noticed in the first place. But it is good to see some smart retailers are monitoring the Twitter and blogosphere noise looking for problems and opportunities.

Here's one of Chris Brogan's tweets about the Garmin GPS whch took place in May, 2008.

    CONFUSION OVER TWITTER FOLLOWING LIMITS

Posted by Bloggers Blog: Blogging the Blogsphere in August 12th 2008
    1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (No Ratings Yet)
    Loading ... Loading ...
TwitterTwitter does not limit the number of people that can follow you. Limits have been imposed on the number of people that you can follow. These following limits are not fixed - they are as low as 2,000 for some users but much higher (over 10,000) for other users.

Twitterers including @BarackObama, @JasonCalacanis, @Scobleizer, @chrispirillo, @guykawasaki, @twitlive, @bloggersblog (my account), @chrisbrogan and many others follow over 10,000 people. One user named @oozzl is following over 160,000 people. The fact that it varies from user to user is confusing but it is apparently intentionally confusing on Twitter's part so that the spammers they are fighting don't know exactly what they are up to. As Twitter writes here there is no magic number. It's unclear whether this strategy will work effectively - as Online Media Cultist notes spammers that find themselves hitting a limt could simply spawn new accounts. This is a problem but fortunately blogs like TwitSpam.org have been doing a great job of pointing out some of these spammers spawning multiple accounts.

This new limit caused confusion when some blog posts earlier today (and some tweets on Twitter) incorrectly said that Twitter had limited the number of people that can follow you to 2,000. A great post here on Stop Twitter Spam provides a summary of today's confusion. Twitter's Evan Williams had to step in at one point and tweet a correction to a post made by Om Malik. You can see the small blogstorm that erupted over Twitter follow limits here on Techmeme.

A post on TechCrunch asks how many people can a Twitterer seriously keep track of anyway? Loic Le Meur provides some answers in this post. Following a large number of people was a lot more useful before Tweet search engines like Summize (now Twitter search) emerged. Now you can keep up-to-date on a breaking news subject with a quick Summize search. Still, there is advantage to having breaking news come instantly at you if you are in the information business. Following a large number of people means you may be more likely to see the information when it first happens.

David Risley blogs that maybe Twitter could charge users that want to follow more than the limit allows. That's a possibility but Twitter could probably make a lot more money simply by accepting advertising such a featured Twitter section that would appear on everyone's Twitter bar. This would drive traffic to individual Twitter accounts and likely help them obtain followers. Facebook does something similar with its Facebook pages. There's a lot of avenues toward monetization that Twitter could take and they will probably try a variety of them at some point.

OFFICIAL GMAIL BLOG NOT FOR POSTING ABOUT GMAIL PROBLEMS

Official Gmail BlogGoogle's popular Gmail email website went down for a couple hours earlier today and TechCrunch noted that Google hadn't even posted anything yet on the Official Gmail Blog. Since that post from TechCrunch, Google has made a post on the Official Gmail Blog. However, the post says the Official Gmail Blog is not generally used for posting about problems and that people should use the Gmail Support the Gmail user group instead of the blog for information.
Many of you had trouble accessing Gmail for a couple of hours this afternoon, and we're really sorry. The issue was caused by a temporary outage in our contacts system that was preventing Gmail from loading properly. Everything should be back to normal by the time you read this.

We heard loud and clear today how much people care about their Gmail accounts. We followed all the emails to our support team and user group, we fielded phone calls from Google Apps customers and friends, and we saw the many Twitter posts. (We also heard from plenty of Googlers, who use Gmail for company email.) We never take for granted the commitment we've made to running an email service that you can count on.

We've identified the source of this issue and fixed it. In addition, as with all issues that affect Gmail and our other services, we're conducting a full review of what went wrong and moving quickly to update our internal systems and procedures accordingly. We don't usually post about problems like this on our blog, but we wanted to make an exception in this case since so many people were impacted. In general, though, if you spot a problem with your Gmail account, please visit the Gmail Help Center and user group, where the Gmail Guides are your fastest source of updates.
Online software products and services really should have a status blog. Twitter has made good use of its status blog. On the other hand, MobileMe has not been doing a good job of updating its status blog. Web services not only need a status blog but they need to keep it updated as promised. It doesn't really make sense for Google to have an Official Gmail Blog and then not intend to use it for serious outages. They did use it in this case but it doesn't sound like they plan to make a habit of reporting problems on the blog.

Twitterers were as usual active about the outage. Webware notes that there were dozens of tweets per second about the Gmail outage during its peek.

WEBFLIPPERS TRY TO TURN POORLY DESIGNED WEBSITES INTO POPULAR NICHE SITES

    Posted by HowToWeb.com in August 12th 2008
    1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (No Ratings Yet)
    Loading ... Loading ...
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has an article about webflippers - people who buy websites with the hope of improving them and then selling them for a higher price. One webflipper bought bird-cage.com for $1,800 and then sold it three years later for $173,000.
Dave Hermansen did not own a bird or a cage when he bought the online store bird-cage.com for $1,800 three years ago. He simply saw a Web site that was "very, very poorly done," and begged the owners to sell it to him. He then redesigned the site, added advertising and drove up traffic. Last December, he sold it for $173,000.

Hermansen, 30, is among the latest wave of entrepreneurs who, like the day traders and real estate investors before them, are looking to make a lot of money without much effort.

They use little more than home computers and free software to buy Web sites that appeal to a small and specific niche. Then they fix up the sites with hopes of reselling them for far more than they paid
The article says that webflippers look for niche websites that are poorly-designed and have little search engine exposure. They tweak the website and improve the website's exposure with SEO techniques.
Creating value, though, is the tricky part. Many Web site flippers said they begin by tweaking a site's template and making other superficial changes like adjusting fonts, colors and type sizes. After that, they manipulate a Web site's structure, coding and presentation so it shows up more prominently in Web searches.

In an era when Web use is increasingly search-driven, making sure people find your site makes all the difference, Hermansen said. "Once you beef up traffic, everything else just happens," he added.
It's much easier said than and done and to be able to do it you would have to have very good idea of what the search engines are looking for. But if you have the skills to dramatically increase traffic to a niche website that has little exposure you should be able to flip the website once you are done. One of the places webflippers sell websites is the Sitepoint Marketplace - there are always a number of websites and domains up for sale there.
